THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF A RENOWNED AMERICAN ARTIST
“The book on Hollis is spectacular. This is the first ‘ART’ BOOK of this latest generation that actually does justice to the person, not just his or her art. Fascinating.”
– Walter Matia, artist and 2023 recipient of the Prix de West Purchase Award
"We received your magnificent book yesterday, and poured over all the wonderful text and reproductions of Hollis’s work. You really did an outstanding job portraying Hollis as he was..a true master craftsman, and a great friend and human being to so many of us privileged to know him."
– Clyde Aspevig, artist and Prix de West Purchase Award winner
“I literally am in tears with the beauty of Hollis' work, and the grace and majesty you afforded it with your beautiful design, careful curation, and lovely prose.”
– Debra Helwig, writer
"I wanted you to know that your book about your friend Hollis arrived and I've had a better chance to more casually study all the images and read some of your writing. What an interesting life, and the writing by you is really remarkable. You have become a master of all forms for that kind of publishing—writing, photography, design—the whole deal. "
– Richard Halstead, portrait artist
"With Hollis Williford: The Crossing at the River, Eric Grant has beautifully and skillfully captured the rich essence of an artist whose work and whose reasons for that work will be reawakened in the eyes and minds of humanity. What a wonderful gift he is unwrapping to all of us who seek to understand life at a level beyond the boundaries of the mundane world."
– Chuck Schroeder, artist and former executive director of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum
"It really is a completely immersive experience, getting to hold the book and see the beautiful spreads and read the story written within all of that. (I too was surprised by its size and elegance.) I love hearing the accounts of how people have been affected by this book you've created that honors Hollis's work and life. What a healing and worthwhile piece you've brought into existence.
– Christy Collins, artist
“The book is genius in its telling and presentation, told straight from his family and close friends (and at times by the artist himself), with delicate details. It includes some of the best reproductions in color and quality of art pieces I've ever seen. It was as though I was opening one of the artist's own sketchbooks in front of me. Magical.”
– Janet Ischy, lifelong friend of Hollis
“I’m speechless. It is quite literally one of the best art books I’ve ever seen.”
– Aaron Blaise, artist, teacher and former Walt Disney animator and director
Hollis Randol Williford was an American artist known for his remarkable versatility and creative range. He excelled in drawing, sculpting, painting and etching, and his work earned him esteem among collectors and institutions alike.
The genius of Williford's work is how it often occupied two spaces and two points in time at once. The artist created many works that embodied the liminal space between two worlds, stretching the limits of composition for the artist and heightening the sense of mystery for the viewer.
“In Swedish, there is a word — ‘Ekta’ — which means genuine, the true, the essential quality of things,” said Clarence Tillenius, an artist and friend. “Hollis is constantly seeking the essential ingredient, the thing that makes his sculpture live. You feel, in the presence of his sculptures, that here is a man who is concerned only with rendering the essential truth of things."
